Click here to view the Arkansas grant page Dear Educator, On October 12, 2009, the Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission, issued a Media Advisory (attached) that stated that over thirty-seven percent (37.5%) of Arkansas’s children are considered overweight and obese. Childhood obesity puts Arkansas’s young people at increased risk of developing diabetes, hypertension, and other negative health conditions. Children who are overweight and obese have lower grades and test scores when compared to children who are within an average weight range. Unfortunately, the commission is dead-on (correct, that is). But perhaps the most chilling issue resulting from the childhood obesity epidemic is this: According to a report from the New England Journal of Medicine… “…today's children will likely become the first generation of children that will not outlive their parents.” Fortunately for the children of Arkansas, the Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission, the Arkansas Department of Education's Office of Coordinated School Health, and Arkansas Children's Hospital have partnered to address this enormous challenge and have launched a $700,000 grant program to tackle childhood obesity and promote health and wellness in schools. The Child Wellness Intervention Program is designed to promote high-quality physical education in our public elementary and middle schools. Schools that receive this grant will be able to craft stronger health and physical education curricula. The article encourages public schools that have not yet done so to apply for this grant and we agree. Schools must submit a letter of intent by October 30 and the grant application by November 20. Forms are attached here and also available online at the Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission's Web site: http://atsc.arkansas.gov This program can help fund new P.E. equipment, provide access to interactive fitness-themed software, and train teachers to tailor coursework with an emphasis on health and exercise.
