How has the focus of exergaming overall changed over the years?
The focus has now shifted from obtaining single piece product orders to now deploying full room concepts, grant assistance, medically driven programming and education on the Exergaming industry. How have some of your customers’ suggestions shaped Exergame Fitness programming?
That is one of our strong points. At the current time we have done well over 350+ locations using our Exergaming products and services. After 30 days of our installation and training at the facility, we do what is called a PRDC (Post-Sale Research & Data Collection). We have a digital survey they can fill out as well as a walk-in evaluation from one of our consultants gathering the much needed data from our customers. We were astonished at what new ideas they came up with, additional programming curriculums and new product ideas. This is a very integral part of what we do because we honestly provide a true partnership to our customers and value their input in this growing industry. We don’t just sell products and services, we sell a fully customized experience that benefits both the customer and our company.
Why was the time right for exergaming to take off in such a big way?
In my opinion the time was right because it seems that technology is finally putting its staple in the kids fitness market as something that is truly working. Exergaming is something that kids gravitate too, they aren’t intimated by traditional weights, boring fitness rooms and running on a track that offers no interaction to keep them from thinking about something else that is fun. On top of that, the programs aren’t really that fun to do. How do we know this…? Well all of the products we carry at Exergame Fitness are tested by kids of all ages, skill levels and sizes and we get their un-biased input. Times have changed, technology is what makes the world improve on all fronts, we simply use what is successful and popular with millions of kids already (videogames) and put an element of active moment into it. We know it is popular with kids and ‘younger’ adults. How are seniors embracing the trend?
Seniors are taking to this one Wii at a time. The Nintendo Wii is a great starter and very cost effective for senior homes and offers some basic simulation & sporting games that promote physical activity and social interaction. The senior market needs something fun and interactive to keep them motivated and this is a simple solution. At our testing and research facility we have seen a great reaction to the Cobalt Flux DDR system that comes with medical hand rails to assist them in this popular dance and step game. The personal trainers seem to love it because this product delivers music, fun visuals and delivers a score reward at the end of the game so they can keep on improving.
Particularly at non-profits with focuses on family programming, do you find it is bringing the family back together instead of each person with their own headphones doing their own thing?
Absolutely! Exergaming is all about multi-user participation and intergenerational play along with single player games that you can focus on yourself to improve self made goals on the games. Many of our YMCAs hold family nights where one family will battle another family in Exergaming tournaments making a fun evening for the entire family. What has been your biggest or most favorite surprise as you’ve watched Exergame Fitness grow?
This is a very easy answer for us. It is coming back to a facility a few months after one of our installations and meeting with the parents of children who couldn’t get them off the couch and change their lifestyle to a healthier one. Time after time we see kids that are staying fit and having fun while doing it. That is the key, just ask them! Exergaming is also a stepping stone to other active sports such as basketball, dance classes, football, soccer, biking, baseball and more. With the technology that is improving on a daily basis, the sky is the limit.
