WATERBURY, CT– Thanks to a federal Carol M. White Physical Education Grant called P.A.C.E. I.T. – Physical Activity Curriculum Enhancement using Integrated Technologies, Waterbury middle school students will be training for lifelong fitness in 3 brand-new state-of-the-art Exergaming Fitness Centers. Exergaming technology harnesses children’s interest in videogame technology to provide highly interactive, rigorous, and research-based physical fitness training that kids want to participate in because it is so much fun to do.

Among the new equipment available for student use are virtual reality treadmills, stationary bikes and ‘stepper’ devices that power PlayStation 3 video games, ultra-realistic experiences on interactive fitness bikes that allow students to experience the thrills of simulated mountain biking, cognitive training devices that help students use exercise to help improve academic performance and problem-solving capabil;itries, and indoor mountain-climbing. All fitness center systems provide detailed and highly specific bio-feedback as well as long and short-term tracking of student performance to help students monitor their progress in achieving their personalized fitness plans.

Many equipment items such as the NeuroActive BrainBike , Trixter Xdream, Virtual Active Matrix Treadmills, iDANCE, and M6 Treadwalls have been recently featured on such programs as Good Morning America, NBC News Today, CBS Morning Show, and Fox Business News, among others.

These Middle School Fitness Centers are absolutely unique; not only in Connecticut, but according to a variety of informed sources, practically the entire Eastern United States.   These centers take the ‘WiiFit idea’ to a whole new level never before seen here in Connecticut.
The fitness centers will be officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the North End Middle School on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, promptly at 5:30 pm, at the start of the Waterbury Board of Education’s workshop.  Health and Physical Education teachers and exergame fitness center experts will be on hand to explain ‘the science behind all of the fun’ and answer questions.  Approximately two dozen students have pre-completed video release permission forms to appear on-camera, will be working out on the equipment and be available to answer questions and/or give their perspectives on this new initiative.
