In a move that’s likely intended to capitalize on the runaway popularity of Wii Fit, the Palo Alto YMCA has announced a partnership with Hudson Soft that will bring Deca Sports for the Wii into the Bay Area fitness center.
Kicking off September 27, this event is the culmination of a week-long collaboration with the America On the Move Foundation — designed to encourage exercise and a healthy diet. The YMCA hopes to lure in big crowds for the final day of the promotion by offering multiple gaming stations featuring Deca Sports in the same space normally reserved for actual sports. Sure, the health benefits of pretending to play volleyball are debatable, but some people need to take baby steps.
Besides, it’s not like this is the first time a real-life organization used a videogame as bait to join their club. Just ask any Iraq-stationed player of America’s Army how effective this marketing technique is.
